Many of the cases that date back decades often have only fragmented bits of information. Take for example Lelisia Slade who went missing in June 1988, but the exact date is unknown. She was reportedly last seen near Lipscomb and Horne Street in Melbourne, Florida, but no one has had contact with the 25-year-old mother since.
Lelisia Slade had fallen into a downward spiral by the time she disappeared. She was the mother of a three-year-old girl and according to The Charley Project, Lelisia had chosen a path that led her down a road of drug addiction. To support her habit, Lelisia reportedly turned to prostitution and would often be in the company of others who suffered from her same vices.
It took three months for Lelisia’s loved ones to report her missing because it was common for her to disappear without a trace. Sometimes, it would be weeks before they heard from her, so they believed she would eventually resurface at the home she shared with her grandmother.
In 1988, Lelisia did have a boyfriend, but he was ultimately eliminated as a suspect because he was in jail when she went missing. Lelisia’s ex-husband, who lived in Georgia, told authorities he didn’t know where she was. It’s unclear who the father of her child is. Authorities have reportedly determined Lelisia was no longer in the Melbourne area and may have passed away.
At the time of her disappearance, Lelisia Slade stood 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 110 pounds. She had brown hair (styled in an Afro) and brown eyes. Both of Lelisia’s ears are pierced. Her middle name is “Renae” and she would be 58-years-old at the time of this publication.
Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Melbourne Police Department at 321-608-6731 or their local authorities. There doesn’t seem to be an agency investigating this case, so there isn’t a case number listed.
Please share this story about Lelisia Slade to help reignite the investigation into her case. She is our sister and her life matters.
Monica Bennett, 15: She & Her 13-Year-Old Brother Vanished In 1989
Police classified them as runaways & only changed their case to “endangered missing” 20 years later.
This is a case I initially came across when I first launched Our Black Girls and it continues to weigh on my heart. I’ve written about it on social media but I haven’t dedicated space here on the site for a full story, until today. It involves siblings, 15-year-old Monica Bennett and her 13-year-old brother Michael, and it centers on how they both went missing from Brunswick, Georgia on June 21, 1989. (more…)
