Akela Thomas, 38: Her Sister Reported Her Missing In 2020

Akela Thomas Missing

*UPDATE* Akela Thomas may no longer be missing, says her sister, who was contacted by police. They claim Akela does not have a cellphone, so she cannot contact her family, but no other information was given. I have decided to keep this article in place until contact with Akela has been made.

Original Story:

The story of Akela Thomas was brought to me by her sister, Shana. Like many cases here, there isn’t much known about the circumstances surrounding Akela’s disappearance, but the State of California Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General’s website shows that the 38-year-old was reported as a missing person on July 15, 2020. She was last seen in Sacramento, California, and was known to frequent cities around the Bay Area.

No one knows when Akela was last seen and she was not employed. Shana did not know where Akela Thomas lived but said she would occasionally stay with people she knew. It was a life she had lived for about eight years and Shana could not verify if Akela may have struggled with mental health concerns.

“Akela kept a beautiful smile on her face and was very vibrant,” said Shana. “She usually would stay in contact with me but it’s been some years now and no one has heard from her—no friends or other family members.”

Shana was the person to report her sister missing to the Sacramento Police Department, but outside of later telling Shana that they had a “run-in” with Akela, they could not provide any information. Shana reached out to the SPD earlier this week to ask why she wasn’t contacted about this alleged “run-in” considering Akela is listed as missing.

“They could not really answer that,” she said. It is unclear if they actually made contact with Akela Thomas because her missing person flyer remains on the Attorney General’s website.

In most missing person cases, checking a person’s cellphone could possibly pinpoint their locations, but Akela reportedly did not have a mobile. Shana admitted that her sister’s lifestyle may be why authorities haven’t investigated more thoroughly.

Despite any setback, Akela Thomas was loved, and those who know her want her to return home.

“Akela was a leader and passionate about everything she believed in,” added Shana.

At the time of her disappearance, Akela Thomas stood 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighed 130 pounds. She had black/dark brown hair and brown eyes. Any distinguishing marks are unknown. Her dental records are not on file.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Sacramento Police Department at (916) 808-0621 or their local authorities. The agency case number is 20-305960.

Please share this story about Akela Thomas to reignite the investigation into this case and to help bring her home. She is our sister, and her life matters.
