Pittsylvania Jane Doe: Partial Skeletal Remains Discovered In 1998

Pittsylvania Jane Doe

A woman has gone unidentified since 1998, and there is no indication that investigators are any closer today than they were decades ago in resolving the case of Pittsylvania Jane Doe. It all began on July 1, 1998, when a man was “bush hogging” or “brush hogging” a field near his home. Brush hogging, or using a rotary mower usually attached to a tractor or similar equipment, is common among farmers. While taking care of the field, he came across a grisly scene: the partial skeletal remains of a woman.

Pittsylvania Jane DoeThe discovery was reportedly near Kerns Church Road in Sutherlin, Virginia in Pittsylvania County. The skeleton was found on the edge of the field next to a wooded area, and investigators determined that Pittsylvania Jane Doe had been there for several months. A medical examiner would include that her time of death could reach back in 1997, but finding her identity has proven to be fruitless.

It was also estimated that Pittsylvania Jane Doe was under 40 years of age, and most likely was somewhere between 25 to 35 years old. Her cause of death could not be determined.

Pittsylvania Jane DoeAt the time of her discovery, it was estimated that Pittsylvania Jane Doe stood 5 feet 3 inches. Her weight could not be determined. Her hair and eye color are unknown. There was reportedly no evidence located on the remains that would indicate that she sustained injuries prior to her death. There was noted dental work, including fillings and at least one crown present. Her dental and DNA records are on file while her fingerprints are not. A black and white sleeveless blouse and a black bra were discovered near her body. One or both of her hands was missing from the body.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner Central District at (804) 786-3174 or their local authorities. The agency case number is W1998-60731.
