Pittsylvania Jane Doe: Partial Skeletal Remains Discovered In 1998

Pittsylvania Jane Doe

A woman has gone unidentified since 1998, and there is no indication that investigators are any closer today than they were decades ago in resolving the case of Pittsylvania Jane Doe.

It all began on July 1, 1998, when a man was “bush hogging” or “brush hogging” a field near his home. Brush hogging, or using a rotary mower usually attached to a tractor or similar equipment, is common among farmers. While taking care of the field, he came across a gruesome scene: the partial skeletal remains of a woman.

The discovery was reportedly near Kerns Church Road in Sutherlin, Virginia, in Pittsylvania County. The skeleton was found on the edge of the field next to a wooded area, and investigators determined that Pittsylvania Jane Doe had been there for several months. A medical examiner would include that her time of death could reach back to 1997, but finding her identity has proven to be fruitless.

It was also estimated that Pittsylvania Jane Doe was under 40 years of age and most likely was somewhere between 25 and 35 years old. Her cause of death could not be determined.
