Lillian Nance, 32: Family Believes Boyfriend Knows What Happened

For nearly 22 years, there has been a cloud over the story about Lillian Nance. This case was sent to me by a supporter of Our Black Girls, and it looks as if police believe the 32-year-old may have been a murder victim. However, her loved ones continue searching for answers in this decades-old Gastonia, North Carolina case.
It was on June 20, 2001, when Lillian Nance left her mother’s home. She was said to have either been headed to her residence or the store; she never arrived at either location. Her son, Markeveus, was 16 then, and many years later, told The News & Observer his mother said she would return shortly. Lillian was with a male friend at the time, but he hasn’t been named. Markeveus recalled hugging his mother, like any other day, not knowing that would be the last time he saw her.

What makes the case even more mysterious are the reported sightings of Lillian Nance. On July 2, someone said they spotted the missing mother in Gastonia. In August, her family officially reported her missing. At the time, Lillian was dating someone who was said to have been violent and regularly abused her. Police believe she was murdered, and although the boyfriend is a person of interest, he hasn’t been named in reports. It is unclear if he is the same man last seen with Lillian. The boyfriend reportedly still lives in the Gastonia area.
Meanwhile, Lillian Nance’s mother, Ms. Everlene, continued to receive tips about her daughter. After hearing that Lillian was seen in Atlanta, Everlene made the trip to Georgia—seven times. She was told that Lillian was there, going by her nickname, “Libby.” However, those sightings couldn’t be substantiated, and the case grew colder.

Lillian Nance wasn’t the type to leave her hometown, nor would she abandon her family. In 2014, her family had her declared legally dead to process her life insurance.
“We know who done it,” said Lillian’s sister Carolyn Nance. “He done something to her. It’s time for him to fess up.” Markeveus still sees the man around town. “It takes everything in me not to do something to him.”
At the time of her disappearance, Lillian nance stood 5 feet 3 inches or 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 130 pounds. She had black/dark brown hair and brown eyes. Lillian was last seen wearing a floral spaghetti-strapped shirt and dark blue denim shorts. Lillian has a small scar above her right eyebrow, small scars on her hands and legs, and an eight to 10-inch scar from her left shoulder blade to her left arm.
Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Gastonia Police Department at (704) 866-6702 or their local authorities. Unfortunately, an agency case number has not been listed.
Please share this story about Lillian Nance to help reignite the investigation into her disappearance. She is our sister, and her life matters.
