Of the hundreds of stories I’ve covered for OurBlackGirls, the story of Teen Jane Doe No. 51 is particularly heartbreaking. On September 13, 1975, a motorist saw something strange while driving by Artesia Boulevard and Wilmington Avenue in Compton, California. It was a frightening sight: a young woman was thrown from a moving vehicle. The car reportedly sped off before the witness could process what occurred. The motorist sped to a nearby business, where they shared what they’d seen with a security guard. The pair called the police, who quickly arrived.

The Autopsy Findings Painted A Grim Picture

Later, an autopsy would uncover details of what happened to the victim. Teen Jane Doe No. 51 was said to be between 14 and 17 years old. She had been shot twice in the head. These injuries rendered her unconscious, but those weren’t the wounds that killed her. It was discovered that when she was tossed from the vehicle, the trauma from the impact ended her life. There were no signs of sexual assault despite her being found nude. Further, toxicology tests showed no signs of drugs or alcohol.

Still, no one has come forward to identify the teen, and few reports exist about her case. She was cremated the same year she was murdered.
