As billions of people worldwide celebrated the New Year, Monique Baugh was being lured to her death. It was New Year’s Eve in Minneapolis, Minnesota when Monique’s boyfriend, a rapper named Momoh, was at their home with their two daughters, aged one and three-years-old. Sometime during the day, Monique, a realtor, told Momoh that she was scheduled to show a prospective client a listing.
*UPDATE* — Elsa Segura, 28, was arrested in connection with Monique’s murder. She’s charged with kidnapping after police say Segura lured Monique under the guise of being a prospective buyer.
It was around 5:30 p.m. when suddenly, a man wearing a black mask stormed into their home and opened fire. Momoh was shot numerous times before the unknown assailant fleed the scene.
Miraculously, Momoh was able to call the police and emergency responders rushed to his side. He was found bleeding on his bedroom floor with his two daughters next to him. Momoh was taken to a local hospital, treated for his injuries, and is expected to recover.
Meanwhile, over in the Willard-Hay section of Minneapolis, police dispatch received a call from a resident who heard three gunshots. Responding officers patrolled the area and in an alley, they found the body of 28-year-old Monique. Her hands were bound with tape and she had been shot three times.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows Monique being forced into the back of a U-Haul van. “Investigators were aware that [Momoh] had recently signed a contract to record rap music and had been flaunting his cash on social media,” the complaint reads. “[Momoh] indicated that numerous individuals knew that he was involved with [Baugh], but he did not believe that anyone who wanted to harm him knew where they lived.”
It’s now being reported that 41-year-old Cedric Berry has been arrested in connection with these crimes. He’s been charged with the kidnapping and murder of Monique Baugh and he faces an attempted kidnapping charge for shooting Momoh. His bond has been set at $2 million and he’s reportedly due to return to court next Tuesday to enter a plea.
It’s reported that investigators tied Berry to the crimes because they matched him with the person on surveillance footage. They also located a black mask that was described by Momoh. Berry is no stranger to law enforcement as he reportedly has been convicted on drug, robbery, and weapons charges along with manslaughter.
I send my sincere condolences to Monique Baugh’s loved ones. She is our sister and her life matters.
